An Introduction tothe Center for research ofChineseNewLiterature of Nanjing University,a Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Ministry of Education

the Center for research of Chinese New Literature of Nanjing Universitywas selected as one of the first batch of key research bases of humanities and social sciences of Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China in December 1999.

The centergrew out ofthe Literature Research Office of National Central University. The first generation of scholars, Wu Mei, Chen Zhongfan, Fang Guangtao, Lu Jiye, Sun Xizhen, and the second generation of scholars, Chen Shouzhu, Chen Baichen, as well as the third generation of scholars Ye Ziming, Dong Jian, laid a solid foundation for the construction of the discipline. For ages, Nanjing University has been giving great support to the discipline of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature as a key construction discipline. A group of scholarsrepresented by Chen Shouzhu, Chen Baichen, Ye Ziming, Dong Jian, Zou Tian and Xu Zhiying, etc. have conducted extremely original research on the historical development of modern literature, the flow of ideas and the works of writers, and have achieved remarkable results in the academic field.

Since the 1980s, a group of young and middle-aged scholars have gradually become the backbone of the Center’s discipline construction with their new research vision and academic achievements, and have formed an academic research system mainly focused on “Studies on Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literary Trends’’, “Studies on Chinese Vernacular Literature in the 20th Century”, “Studieson Modern Chinese Literary Associations and Genres”, “Studieson the History of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Drama”, “Studies on Taiwan, Hong Kong and Overseas Chinese Literature”, and “Studies on the Ideological Trend of Enlightenment and Chinese Literature in the 20th century”. It became a key discipline of Jiangsu Province in 1987 and was rated as a national key discipline in 2002as well as a supporting discipline of the “985” Social Science Innovation Base. In June 1999, the Center forthe Study of Modern Chinese Literature of Nanjing University was re-established as a large scientific research base, with the key discipline of Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature (including drama) in Jiangsu Province as the main body, integrating and absorbing the academic strengths of the University and domestic research on modern Chinese literature and culture. In December 1999, the Centerwas selected asa key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. In 2010, the Center was officially renamedas “Center for research of Chinese New Literature.
